whisper vs defender

Is it better to play whisper or defender?
And why is defender rarely used now?

Regarding your question:

Defender and whisper are both "tanks":

Defender has empower as aura to support the party & shorter cooldowns on their combo. Also, more damage while not on combo compared to whisper. Defender is a very good support in PVP and decent to kill mobs in a party.

Whisper is meant to kill people and monsters on combo (axecalibur) and it can reach very high damage while in combo, but very low damage when not on combo. Whisper party buff is only good at low level / early in the game.

Overall defender is a better character to have in a party for PVE. Whisper is better to have in a party for PVP:
