I read the books too. Didn't see John coming back or Melisandre turn into an old bag when she took off her necklace while nekkid or that ending scene in the last episode (no spoiler!!)

That lazy bum George R. R. Martin is slacking release of the latest book. And yeah the show and the books diverged pretty far in the later seasons.
