I remember getting like fish lvl / rank 40-50 or what was it, but nothing good overall. Is it worth doing and if so, how?

Only worth it if you want to catch Sweetfish that you need as part of the quest to create your own guild.
You can get SES stones from Rainbow Trout.
Other than that its pretty worthless now - hence why you wont really see anyone doing it.

Unfortunately, this is no longer a valid tactic as crystals are uber cheap and economy just went batshit crazy with people undercutting eachother.
They also used to hold fishing events on regular basis, winner of which would win either SES or skill reset stones or w.e.
Fishing was best before the crafting system was applied(which was applied even before epics so that's a looong time ago). You could use the maple xbow bug to make tonns of money. After they fixed that the amount of people fishing became ver low.
3 things you can use fishing for like already mentioned: Rainbow trouts(SES), Sweetfish (Guild quest), Extract unique items for crystals
